Terroir

Its geology reveals the occurrence of sandstone and gravelly, stony marl but its primary component and driving force behind its identity is pebbles. At elevations ranging from 50 to 150 metres above sea level, they store up heat during the day and promote peak ripeness in the grapes. The result is wines with Mediterranean character that are powerful yet also well-balanced. Though intense, they do not lack finesse.

The local climate, whose defining features are relatively low rainfall and more importantly, fairly cool nights as summer draws to a close, is extremely conducive to gradual ripening of the berries, with no sudden changes, and therefore elegant expression in the wines. This is no mean achievement in an era when global warming is being keenly felt and most enthusiasts are shying away from heavy wines in favour of more easy-drinking pours that cause less palate fatigue.

History

Saint-Drézéry may not be Languedoc’s largest appellation, but it certainly does not lack personality, not by any measure. And although its independent wineries are admittedly small in number, they continue to plough on and build on their winegrowing ambitions, making this one of the most interesting wine regions around Montpellier.
